There is perhaps no one more fitting to appear on a radio show devoted to European electropop than French musician, producer, and composer Jean-Michel Jarre, one of the great pioneers of electronic music. I was beyond thrilled to get a chance to chat with Jarre about his newly released album <i>Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise</i>, which I have been playing in heavy rotation on The Knix Mix since its May release.<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Never one to do anything halfway, some of Jarre's four-decade long career highlights include having the best-selling ever French album, his 1976 debut <i>Oxygène</i>, holding the record for the largest ever audience at an outdoor venue, and being the first Western musician to be officially invited to perform in the People's Republic of China in 1981. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLSS563XrLqHxpv20TuhAzExOZUjROonRXaI4C5fvvkqZUgBtFZEmVz42nXZC7ZifhQJD81SUJT4EfW-TEq4nGSK_kzzzW7yyT6p81oV-cYlab4RACjOA61eGbYXIjVm8G3sde7FbY-Q/s1600/jarre.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjLSS563XrLqHxpv20TuhAzExOZUjROonRXaI4C5fvvkqZUgBtFZEmVz42nXZC7ZifhQJD81SUJT4EfW-TEq4nGSK_kzzzW7yyT6p81oV-cYlab4RACjOA61eGbYXIjVm8G3sde7FbY-Q/s1600/jarre.jpg" style="cursor: move;" /></a>In the same bigger is better vein, his two-part album project took five years to complete and features a list of 30 collaborators that reads like the Who's Who of the electronic music genre. The results were <i>Electronica 1: The Time Machine</i> and<i> Electronica 2: The Heart of Noise. </i>(<i>Electronica 1</i> hit the airwaves in October of last year.) Intriguingly, the project includes a few collaborators who aren't primarily known for music such as whistleblower Edward Snowden and director John Carpenter, who is known for films like <i>Halloween</i> but is a talented composer as well. Jarre chose people who were a source of inspiration to him over the course of his career. The list includes early pioneers in their own right like Air and Tangerine Dream (one of the late Edgar Froese's last projects) and contemporary artists like M83 and Gesafellstein. Naturally, I was quite excited that Gary Numan appears on the track "Here for You" - one of my favorites on <i>Electronica 2. </i>Other names plucked from the music charts during my formative years (Yes, the 80s!) that I am partial to are Vince Clarke, Pet Shop Boys, and Cyndi Lauper.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Jarre actually traveled to work with his collaborators in person rather than simply exchanging digital files by Email. Jarre is aware that creating music can be a very solitary exercise, much like a writer or a painter, and it took courage for people to welcome him into their home studios. Basically, electronic music geeks sharing their grown up toys! The result is music that blends the unique qualities of each artist with Jarre's own well-honed style.</div>

<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">I've done a few Q&A profiles of artists and other WERU programmers along the way, and I thought it would be a bit of fun to answer a few questions myself. Of course, you know I spin electronic music on <i>The Knix Mix</i> every Friday night from 10 p.m. to midnight. If you don't, you can listen by going to <a href="http://weru.org/">weru.org</a> and live stream or listen to a previously recorded show. I'd always been aware of WERU being from this part of Maine. I graduated from Brewer High School in 1988, which happens to be the same year WERU was getting underway at the Hen House in Blue Hill. When I returned to Maine after a decade in Massachusetts I moved just down the road from the station. There's a great sense of community at the station, and it doesn't hurt that I get to play the kind of music I wanted to hear. I've been at the helm of The Knix Mix for over two years and counting. Which is, come to think of it, one of the reasons I coined "Knix Picks." So I could keep track of all the new music in that span of time that I love, love, love!</span></div>

<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>Favorite genre of music?</b> My heart belongs to electronic music, which encompasses a range of styles. Basically, I’m a total child of the 80s. British New Wave was the soundtrack of my youth, and I subsequently love anything that has </span>synthpop<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> origins. Ah, nostalgia! </span>Electropop<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span>electro<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> house, </span>electro<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> clash, French house, club/dance...Sensing a theme here? Really, I adore anything you can dance to.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>Favorite band?</b> It’s hard to name just one, but there is exceptional music to dance to coming out of Europe. Artists like </span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Röyksopp</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Etienne de Crécy</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, Autokratz, Vitalic, The Bloody Beetroots, Yuksek, Simian Mobile Disco and Soulwax. I also love music to brood to. Bands that have that angst-ridden post-punk influence like Motorama, The Juan MacLean and White Lies.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>Favorite song?</b> I’m really crushing on </span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Etienne de Crécy</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> generally, but “Someone Like You” on <i>Essentials (Best of)</i> is amazing. It also appears on <i>Super Discount 2</i> as “Fast Track.” Other tracks that I adore are Vitalic’s “Poison Lips</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">,” “On a Train” by Yuksek and Simian Mobile Disco’s “I Believe.”</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>What was the first LP or CD you bought? </b>The first album that I picked out on my own was Shaun Cassidy’s second studio album </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Born Late</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">. I was kind of obsessed with Shaun </span>Cassidy<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> in elementary school. I swooned over him</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> as little brother Joe in </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">The Hardy Boys</i><span style="font-family: inherit;">. I remember bringing the album to my 3rd-grade</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> class’s show and tell. I sat up front and held the album cover open while the teacher played the record for the class. I couldn’t have been prouder.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">What hobbies and interests do you have outside of music?</b><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> I love hiking and snowshoeing, which I get to do a lot of living in Orland. Besides conveniently living very close to the station, I also live very close to the Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust trail system and a short drive from Acadia National Park. I love nature photography, and I take a lot of photos on my hikes. I have two rescue dogs who are my hiking partners and frequent subjects of my photography. This doesn't mean I'm especially outdoorsy. I'm not the person you want with you on a mountaineering expedition. I wouldn't last a hot minute. I have a romantic notion of nature and am fascinated with natural history and anthropology. I’m a voracious reader, and I love to browse the library or used bookstores on Saturdays. I love all things vintage, so flea markets and antiquing are fun for me too. I value learning new things. I’ve dabbled in acting and working with clay, and I’ve continued to take writing classes over the years.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>If you could hang out with anyone, alive or dead, who would you pick and why?</b> I would love to meet Gary Numan, who is one of the pioneers of electronic music. I’ve seen him in concert a couple of times, which was great fun. He smiled at me when I yelled for him to sing “Down in the Park.” I’d especially love it though if I could hang out with Josh Gates for an <i>Expedition Unknown</i> adventure or two. He’s kind of cute (and very married), true, but I’m also exceedingly envious of his job. Something that combines travel, adventure, history, archeology, and anthropology? Sign me up! Just don’t sign me up for a spelunking adventure because the movie <i>The Descent</i> scarred me for life.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>If you were an animal, what animal would you be and why? </b>I would want to be an owl. Owls symbolize intuition and have highly evolved senses - seeing what other can’t. They seem wise and cerebral, but they are also stealthy and can use those talons pretty effectively when they need to.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Favorite food?</b><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> I could probably live a long, long time on pizza and cheesecake. I won’t. But I could.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>Favorite book?</b> Honestly, I could probably expound more on books than on music. Music I like specifically. Books I like generally. Though I’ve come to prefer reading nonfiction. I think everyone has a story to tell, and real life is often more interesting than fiction. </span><i style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Devil in the White City</i><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"> is a great example of compelling historical nonfiction. I read a lot of adventure books where people overcome – or don’t – seemingly insurmountable obstacles like </span><i style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Touching the Void</i><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span><i style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Into Thin Air</i><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"> and </span><i style="text-indent: -0.25in;">Endurance: Shackleton’s Incredible Voyage</i><span style="text-indent: -0.25in;">. I love satirical </span>memoirists<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"> like </span>Augusten<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"> Burroughs and David </span>Sedaris<span style="text-indent: -0.25in;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> too. Laugh out loud hysterical!</span></span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>Favorite movie? </b></span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Henry and June</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">1984</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Little Children</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">,</span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> The Shining</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, and </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">Out of the Blue.</i></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">If you could have any super power, what would it be?</b><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> To know the unknowable and solve life’s mysteries. Like where did the settlers from the Roanoke Colony go? What happened to Amelia Earhart? What’s up with the Bermuda Triangle? That kind of omniscient knowing.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">If you could visit any place in the world, where would it be?</b><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> New Zealand is at the very top of my bucket list. Amazing flora and fauna sans large land predators or snakes. Perfect! Sir Edmund Hillary, the first man to summit Everest, was a Kiwi!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"><b>What would people be surprised to know about you?</b> I have two teenage sons who are amazing. They spend their school year in Massachusetts. They’ve </span>co hosted<span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> </span><i style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">The Knix Mix</i><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> a few times. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Keston</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, my youngest, has a boy band aesthetic, plays piano and prefers dance pop. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Keegan</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;">, my oldest, looks like he could have been a Seattle rocker circa 1990, plays guitar and is into progressive rock. They both love </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">WERU</span><span style="font-family: inherit; text-indent: -0.25in;"> but neither are into electronic music, and they are spectacularly unimpressed that their mom has a radio show.</span></span></li>

Of course, I'm more electro pop than experimental electronic on The Knix Mix as a rule. I'm also ridiculously sentimental, so music that is evocative of the alternative music of the '80s and '90s gets my attention. If it's danceable, even better. It's curious to see Leftfield and The Chemical Brothers - both formed in 1989 and a big deal in the '90s - appearing on a 2015 list. Welcome back, guys! New Order is on the list as well, and I dare you to listen to Motorama and not be reminded of New Order's first incarnation before Ian Curtis's death - Joy Division. So check it out and let me know what you think! </span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></b> <b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Arca <i>Mutant</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><i>Mutant</i> is Venezuelan Alejandro Ghersi's second studio album. The album is unsettling and corporeal in its experimentation with sound and subject matter.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/0SYMoTBYT04/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/0SYMoTBYT04?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Big Data <i>2.0</i></span></b></div>
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">American producer Alan Wilkis's project, Big Data, offers danceable hooks for the Internet age. <i>Dangerous</i> features New York-based quintet Joywave.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/E8b4xYbEugo/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/E8b4xYbEugo?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow; line-height: 22.4px;">Björk</span><b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"> <i>Vulnicura</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><i>Vulnicura </i>is the 9th studio album of the accomplished Icelandic songstress </span><span style="line-height: 22.4px;">Björk. The album follows the arc of a relationship through a breakup.</span> </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Bob Moses <i>Days Gone By</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Deep house meets live instrumentation in this debut album from the New York-based duo.</span><br />

<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The Chemical Brothers <i>Born in the Echoes</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="color: yellow;"><span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">The duo's 8th studio album features guest vocals by St.Vincent and Cate Le Bon, among others. The title track, <i>Born in the Echoes</i>, has been on repeat play on The Knix Mix since the disc arrived in the studio. These old pros still have it going on.</span></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/saZVNLMMmmo/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/saZVNLMMmmo?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="background-color: black;"><b style="font-family: inherit;">Empress Of </b><i style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Me</b></i></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This is Lorely Rodriguez's debut album using her "Empress Of" alter ego. The album is full of introspection and melodic vocals. With Rodriguez handling everything from songwriting to production, it really is the expression of "Me."</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Ht5d7gVqo1I/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Ht5d7gVqo1I?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>

<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The third installation of the <i>Super Discount</i> series from the French producer and DJ arrived a good ten years after the second installment. Well worth the wait.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/RVtqjL1Ta3A/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/RVtqjL1Ta3A?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">FKA Twigs <i>M3LL155X EP</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The "Melissa" EP builds on British FKA Twig's earlier work replete with haunting vocals and commentary about femininity.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/bYU3j-22360/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/bYU3j-22360?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Grimes <i>Art Angels</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">Grimes is the alter ego of Vancouver native Claire Boucher, who defies female pop vocalist convention by doing it her way.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/Tv9YoYCKNoE/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Tv9YoYCKNoE?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Holly Herndon <i>Platform</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">American Herndon is not only accomplished musically - she also happens to be a doctoral student in composition at Stanford. Herndon uses technology as a means of self-expression without being cold or impersonal.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/ybzSWlpgJOA/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ybzSWlpgJOA?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Humans <i>Noontide</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Humans is the Vancouver duo of Peter Ricq and Bobbie Slade. The album is full of auditory twists and turns. Peter, who I had the pleasure of interview on The Knix Mix, brings a gift for the visual arts to Humans, which makes their videos well worth checking out.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/vhMKBHfzmGM/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/vhMKBHfzmGM?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Jamie xx <i>In Colour</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><i>In Colour</i> is English producer Jamie Smith first full-length album. Influenced by vintage club culture, it has elements of everything that has shaped Smith's sound.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/WjNssEVlB6M/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/WjNssEVlB6M?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Kate Tempest <i>Everybody Down</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The debut album from the English poet and spoken word artist. Tempest weaves a gritty narrative with hip hop influenced beats and a South East London accent honed by battle-rap practice.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/JEiBdU0tFB0/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/JEiBdU0tFB0?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Leftfield <i>Alternative Light Source</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">I couldn't be more excited about the first Leftfield album released since 1999's <i>Rhythm and Stealth</i>. As innovative and relevant as ever.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/a4kwatovztI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/a4kwatovztI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Le Galaxie Le Club</span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This '80s influenced Irish electro-pop band's sophomore album features upbeat tracks that make you want to move your body and an album cover that screams Miami Vice. I kind of love it.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/DPD6Igxgk3Y/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/DPD6Igxgk3Y?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<div>
<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Motorama <i>Poverty</i></span></b></div>
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This Russian band is a throwback to the post-punk era. Their cold wave sound is evocative of Joy Division. Motorama is a well kept secret worth a listen.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/2w5QNR_BKn0/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/2w5QNR_BKn0?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">New Order <i>Music Complete</i></span></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><i>Music Complete</i> is New Order's 10th studio album. Despite the departure of Peter Hook and the ensuing drama, this album is a return to form for the reconfigured New Order.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/NPAfi6fbvTk/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/NPAfi6fbvTk?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Panda Bear <i>Panda Meets the Grim Reaper</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;">The fifth studio album for American producer Panda Bear. A contemplative and somewhat doom-laden album where electronic meets psychedelia.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: black; font-family: inherit;"><iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/prBaZzYmQrI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/prBaZzYmQrI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></span></div>

<b style="font-family: inherit;"><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Purity Ring <i>Another Eternity</i></span></b></div>
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This is the sophomore album for the Canadian duo. Sweeping pop sound with emotive lyrics. </span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><b style="background-color: black;"><span style="line-height: 20.79px;">Superhumanoids</span> <i>Do You Feel Okay?</i></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This LA trio's sophomore album is '80s synthpop inspired electro-dance. Do YOU feel okay?</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;">Louisianian singer-songwriter Aries Marquis creates music with a soul. Says Marquis about his debut album, <i>Imperfection</i>, "If you love music that tells true experiences, is passionate and has substance, then you will love the album!"</span> </span></div>

<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite artist?</b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Although I do have a list of artists that inspire me, my favorite artist is Eric Benet. I feel that Eric and I have many similarities in vocal skills, lyricism, and musical arrangement. One of my favorite albums by Eric is <i>True to Myself</i>, which he sets the tone by letting listeners know to just be yourself and change for no one. If you have something, go forth with it, and do not follow what others do. That is how I have positioned myself in my personal music journey.</span></span></div>

Today everything has shifted to such a crossover, eclectic feel, and I feel that pop has the greatest impact on reaching audiences on a large scale. I’ve incorporated a lot of pop and soul into my music. Pop can have a </span>variety of <span style="font-family: inherit;">different sounds, and that's what I look for in order to express myself through my music.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite song?</b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">I have a ton of great songs that I wish I could mention, but my favorite uptempo song is "You’re The Only One" by Eric Benet from his <i>Love and Life</i> album. That song introduced me to Eric in 2008, and it was the epitome of how I envision songs should be: great production and arrangements that are not trendy but still appeal to the listener, mature lyricism, very groovy sound, and a soulful delivery. That song has yet to bore me.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What is your earliest music memory?</b> M</span><span style="font-family: inherit;">y earliest music memories consist of me singing in church choirs as a child. Surprisingly, I didn’t do anything worth talking about, musically speaking, until the second semester of my senior year in high school. I had no clue that I would dive into music like I have, which is the funniest part. I had no clue that I would be writing, performing and making music that people would actually love!</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What was the first LP or CD you bought?</b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">The first album that I </span>purchased<span style="font-family: inherit;"> and listened to until it was destroyed was <i>The Five Heartbeats</i> soundtrack. Before that I just listened to Gospel music, R&B music, and a few other genres. I didn’t realize what type of music I actually liked at the time, so I couldn’t pinpoint why I actually loved that soundtrack so much. Now I can tell you that it was because of the soulfulness! My favorite song on that album was “Are You Ready For Me?” My family used to laugh at me when I played that song, but I couldn’t help it! The song was on point!</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What was the first artist you saw in concert? </b></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">The first artist I saw in concert was the person that I WANTED to be the first person I saw in concert - Eric Benet! I was given some tickets to see Eric Benet at the River Center in downtown Baton Rouge, and my brother and I went. It was everything I expected, plus more! Great showmanship, a lot of energy, and Benet singing my favorite songs. If I could repeat that concert again, I would!</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What hobbies and interests do you have?</b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Outside of music, my second love is politics. I love talking about issues that impact people. I want to impact the lives of people in a positive way, and two of the most certain ways to do that is through music and politics.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Do you have a nickname? </b></span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">When I was in my military unit, my fellow soldiers used to call me “Choir Boy," ironically from The Five Heartbeats. Some of the ladies that thought I was stuck up called me “Pretty Boy," which is actually my favorite. I actually use that one from time to time. The women of my family call me "</span>Reesee<span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">," and the men of my family call me "Rese."</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Where have you traveled? Favorite destination? </b></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I honestly do not have a favorite destination, because I just love to travel. Long road trips are one of the greatest things on earth! You get to see new things, feel new atmospheres, and just get out. It’s a real stress reliever to know you’re not just boxed up in one location all of the time.</span></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">

I would also pick </span>D’Angelo<span style="font-family: inherit;"> and Jamar Rogers from <i>The Voice</i>. It would be fun to pick their brains on how they create their sound and what drives them.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite book? </b></span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">Almost any book that is informative. I love to learn, and I'm a huge fan of history. </span><span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">I can’t waste my time reading things that are made up just for entertainment or are irrelevant to my </span>existence <span style="font-family: inherit; line-height: 115%;">when I can be educating myself.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite movie? </b></span><span style="font-family: inherit;">At this present moment, my favorite movie is <i>The Pursuit of Happiness</i>. It shows that many people that became successful had to struggle before the big break came around. I can easily relate to the things the main character went through. Like him, I strive to reach the day it all pays off.</span></span></div>

Thanksgiving is the perfect holiday, in my opinion. It’s all about family gatherings and there is lots of food! I've never had a bad Thanksgiving!</span></span></div>

The things that I’ve had to deal with, as I said before, will take you right to my favorite movie, <i>The Pursuit of Happiness</i>. I’ve done a lot yet I still feel like I have a long ways to go, which I am just fine with!</span></span></div>

Although I've received some really great comments, that is ranked number one!</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Are there any issues you feel passionate about?</b> </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">I do have quite a few issues that I am very passionate about, especially pertaining to American society. I have a strong issue with violence and crime in America, with the judicial system of America, and about the domestic situations of citizens in America. I feel that this country needs an overhaul As far as the music industry, I feel substance has taken a backseat to kiddie lyricism, and originality has been replaced with follow-the-leader sound. There are a lot of music fans that feel that this is leading to the decrease in album sales and music quality overall.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-size: 12pt;">GOBI is an indie electronic trio based in Austin, Texas who create their own brand of electronic dance music by adding the dimension of rap delivered by vocalist Chuco Phil. GOBI's debut release <i>Gold on Black Ice (Deluxe) LP</i> adds new depths to their signature style; the bass and beats still bring fans to the dance floor while Justin Dillon contributes analog synths and digital plug-ins for a little nod to electronic music of the past. Drummer Matthew Kevin Dunn adds a live element to the production.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-size: 12pt;">GOBI describes their music as a direct fusion of their interests and love for artists they have been influenced by. GOBI is very inspired by the early house music often played in the clubs in Juarez, Mexico when they were growing up. Chuco Phil explains, "We all grew up loving the Deftones and although our music is not rock and does not include heavy guitar, the keys we use and the darkness that some of our beats have in them was definitely influenced by their music." GOBI also listened to gangsta rap, hi-hop and turntablists as they were growing up. "Naturally we negotiated ways to create a sound and vibe that we hope touches on all of our influences and loves," says Chuco Phil.</span></div>

<span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial; font-size: 12pt;">In a city known for music, the band's energy fueled live show garnered them Austin Music Foundation's "Artist of the Month." Last summer the mayor of Austin even declared June 6th as "GOBI Day!" GOBI has shared the stage with some artists know to Knix Mix fans such as MSRTKRFT, Paper Diamond, and Big Gigantic. GOBI has performed at numerous festivals including Insomniac's Nocturnal Fest, Neon Desert Music Fest, and the Pachanga Music Festival. GOBI's re-release of their debut LP Gold on Black Ice with five previously unreleased songs became available on February 10, 2015.</span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
</div>
<ol>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Favorite band?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> Deftones</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">What is your earliest music memory?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> My earliest memory of first really “feeling” music is when I was about 3yrs old. My mom took me to a nearby Indian reservation in New Mexico. There was a ceremony going on where they had built a fire, and there were dancers in traditional garb. Most of the music was simply made from a group of men humming and singing a simple melody, but the drums…the drums seemed to possess my body. Before I knew it, I was dancing around the fire with the men. My mom told me to stop, but one of the dancers said that it was fine. That was probably the first memory I have of truly being inspired by music beyond logic and comprehension. It was also the first time I learned how you can meet new and interesting people through music; how communal and nurturing the whole music culture should and can be.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">What was the first band you saw in concert?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> My dad took me to see Alan Jackson when I was five, but my first concert that I chose - rather begged - to go to was Pearl Jam. The Ramones was the opening band. Pure rock amazement!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">What hobbies and interests do you have?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> We love to get out of the city and get into nature - mainly because we are obsessed with space. When we tour through the Midwest, we often stop at our drummer’s dad’s house out in Clay Center, Kansas. We love to drive out to the fields, have some smoke and some cold ones and just look up in awe. When you can see the belt of the Milky Way, you can really put a lot of things in perspective. Suddenly problems seem to dissipate and inspiration grows. If you follow us on Twitter, we are always tweeting about new discoveries in our galaxy and the infinite galaxies beyond.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Do you have a nickname?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> I go by “Chuco Phil,” Justin goes by “Dillon,” and Matt goes by “Dunny.” So, yeah, I guess we all have nicknames.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Favorite food?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> We love Mexican food. Growing up on the border, you could never have Christmas without tamales. We’ve come to the conclusion that the best gorditas come from a small spot in Canutillo, Texas named - quite appropriately - The Little Diner.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Favorite book?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> Right now, our favorite book is <i>Ready Player One</i>. We have read it a few times and have listened to the audible version on the road multiple times. My favorite book of all time would have to be <i>The Fountainhead</i>. I’ve read it over four times but not because of the political themes or rhetoric. I love the idea of Howard Roark and how uncompromising, unique, groundbreaking, and individualized he is with respect to his craft of architecture, which is his art.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">If you could have any </span>superpower</b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"><b>, what would it be?</b> This one is </span>tough <span style="font-size: 12pt;">because we read a bunch of comics. I was always fascinated by telepathy, but after a while my own thoughts drive me nuts, so this would end up most likely being a curse. I once read a comic about Gambit and in the comic they noted that one of his highest powers was his charm. I thought that was hilarious, but as an adult I realize how powerful that can be. Just ask George </span>Clooney <span style="font-size: 12pt;">or Bill Clinton.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black; font-size: 12pt;"><b>Best compliment ever received?</b> When the crowd instantly begins to dance is not only the greatest immediate feedback, but also the best compliment we can receive. Quite simply - dancing is like being on a jet ski, and you can’t be mad when you’re on a jet ski.</span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><b><span style="font-size: 12pt;">Biggest misconception about you?</span></b><span style="font-size: 12pt;"> A lot of people think since we play electronic music that all we do is DJ, go to clubs and listen to music that goes “oonce, oonce, oonce” all day and night. But being born in Texas and being classically trained in different instruments, we love to check out jazz artists, bluegrass, rock, and classical. We like to switch instruments when we practice and just jam out; to reach that point of spontaneity and get back to improvisation.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Too bad I don't have a club to play in, no? There are more where these came from, but if you want to turn it up with music that makes DJ Knix want to go dancing, add these to your playlist!<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Vitalic</span> - <b>Poison Lips</b></span></h3>
Pascal Arbez, otherwise known as Vitalic, is a French producer who has been at this electronic music thing since the late 90's. He also happens to be friends with The Hacker. As in Miss Kittin & the Hacker. "Poison Lips" is from the 2009 album <i>Flashmob</i>.<br />

<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Miss Kittin & The Hacker</span> - <b>Life on MTV</b></span></h3>
Speaking of Miss Kittin & The Hacker, the debut album of the electronic music duo is appropriately called <i>First Album</i>. The French Miss Kittin began her career as a DJ before working with The Hacker. The album version of "<a href="https://soundcloud.com/misskittin/sets/with-the-hacker-first-album">Life on MTV</a>" is the one I prefer. The vocals on the video version are just different enough to off my groove, but I still like it. Will it date me if I tell you that I remember the first video played on MTV? "Video Killed the Radio Star" by The Buggles in case you were curious.<br />

<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Étienne de Crécy</span> - <b>Someone Like You</b></span></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
French music pioneer Étienne de Crécy's "Someone Like You" is the anti-love song and really fun to dance to! You can pick it up on<i> Super Discount 2</i> or <i>Essentials (Best of)</i>, which has some of his other must own tracks.</div>

<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Ascii.Disko</span> - <b>Einfach</b></span></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Ascii.Disko is the project of German-born Daniel Holc who now resides in Madrid, Spain. Before becoming an electronic music producer and DJ, he played guitar for a rock band. Who knew? The eponymously titled album <i>Ascii.Disko</i> is deliriously fun to dance to.</div>

<h3>
<span style="font-size: large;"><span style="font-weight: normal;">Club 8</span> - <b>Stop Taking My Time</b></span></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
Swedish Club 8 is the only indie pop group that made the (abbreviated) playlist, but everything in Sweden is better. "Stop Taking My Time," which could be the theme song for my life, came from one of my favorite albums of 2013, <i>Above the City</i>.</div>

MSTRKRFT (pronounced "master craft") is an electronic duo out of Toronto, Canada. "Street Justice" is from their debut album <i>The Looks</i>, which came out in 2006, and the video as homage to 70's era Soul Train.</div>

Here are a few cherry picked tracks I've had in heavy rotation on The Knix Mix. There are three Canadian acts featured - two out of Vancouver, British Columbia. So "Go Canada!" I say!<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Mother Mother</span> - <b>Very Good Bad Thing</b></h3>
This is the fifth album by the indie band based out of Vancouver. They have an art pop aesthetic - though vocalist Ryan Guldemond's hair is very Front 242. I'm into "Modern Love." No, it's not a Bowie cover.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/QuiaRSD1sNs/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QuiaRSD1sNs?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Purity Ring</span> - <b>Another Eternity</b></h3>
The Canadian electronic duo released their second studio album this year. There are a few tracks I like on the album. I'm particularly keen on the tracks "Flood on the Floor" and the third single "Bodyache."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/LbqcXnTt-7o/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/LbqcXnTt-7o?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Panda Bear</span> - <b>Panda Bear Meets the Grim Reaper</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Panda Bear, a founding member of the band Animal Collective, has the experimental sound we've come to expect with a little psychedelia thrown in the mix. Check out "Boys Latin."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/prBaZzYmQrI/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/prBaZzYmQrI?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Corners</span> - <b>Maxed Out on Distractions</b></h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
This Los Angeles based four piece does post punk proud with this October 2014 release. I'm smitten with the song "Love Letters." Though reminiscent of Joy Division or early The Cure, Corners stands apart.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/qtokIOGCPDk/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/qtokIOGCPDk?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit; font-weight: normal;">Kasper <span style="line-height: 14.6545457839966px;">Bjørke</span> </span>- <b>After Forever</b></span></h3>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
The Danish producer takes a melancholic synth driven direction on this album, which takes its name from a piece by the Brooklyn based visual artist John Copeland. The track "Sylvia" is lush with a bit of a dark wave vibe. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/bthfcQFNMys/0.jpg" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/bthfcQFNMys?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Brooke Fraser</span> -<b> Brutal Romantic</b></h3>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
The popular New Zealand singer songwriter moves to a more electronic sound than her previous work. "Thunder" is a gorgeous track that showcases Fraser's equally gorgeous voice.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: start;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/YMeuF0182FY/0.jpg" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YMeuF0182FY?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<h3 style="text-align: start;">
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Humans</span> - <b>Noontide</b></h3>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This is Vancouver based indie electronic duo of Peter Ricq and Robbie Slade's first full length album. Ricq, interestingly, is also an artist and illustrator known for co-creating the Canadian animated TV series League of Super Evil. His input makes Humans' official videos very much worth watching. Check out the trippy "Tell Me" and the short-film-as-music-video "Follow."<br />

<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Brooklynese by way of Copenhagen, <span style="line-height: 16.5454540252686px;">Nanna Øland Fabricius, better know as Oh Land, </span>found her way to singing and songwriting after a serious back injury altered her plans of becoming a professional ballet dancer. It is said that the most bitter of trails are often blessings in disguise. Music gave Fabricius an outlet to express her grief and sorrow and quickly grew into a new direction for her life. Fabricius grew up surrounded by music: her mother is an opera singer, her father an organist. Family lore has it that she was quieted by her mother singing the Requiem while still in the womb. She didn't always consider her unconventional rearing a gift, but the advice and support of her family has proven invaluable. </span><br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikcXKfaITC3Qab-9CtCeZDu8Be7S_gNIosVeBMW6IybWdILRIbwOTIK5T-AL-7n_PYL0U6GXtjQx1CmOqnJGvJAqlMudV7Q7QA1mivPn72lwi98E8WRh-Fd_hJ8AfHYkmDbQxhyY785Q/s1600/Ohland1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikcXKfaITC3Qab-9CtCeZDu8Be7S_gNIosVeBMW6IybWdILRIbwOTIK5T-AL-7n_PYL0U6GXtjQx1CmOqnJGvJAqlMudV7Q7QA1mivPn72lwi98E8WRh-Fd_hJ8AfHYkmDbQxhyY785Q/s1600/Ohland1.jpg" /></a><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Given her classic beauty and dance background, Fabricius could have taken the pop princess career path but instead chose t<span style="line-height: 16.5454540252686px;">he moniker Oh Land (derived from her middle name) to lend a bit of mystery to the person behind the music. </span><span style="line-height: 16.5454540252686px;">Fabricius says that the name gave her freedom from being cast into any cliche. Oh Land might be a band or a person, which leaves listeners curious but with no preconceived notions. </span>Fabricius isn't one to take her looks too seriously or cash in on her feminine appeal. Instead she has a bit of fun changing her aesthetic from album to album as another aspect of the creative process. For <i>Earth Sick</i>, she has a minimal cool girl chic vibe that makes me want to cut my hair short and rock a black catsuit.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit; line-height: 16.5454540252686px;"><span style="line-height: 16.5454540252686px;">The concept for <i>Earth Sick</i> came about when Fabricius watched a documentary on astronauts. Having dreamed of being home again, an astronaut has to contend with the irony of feeling ill upon their return to Earth. The feeling of being far from home and longing to return is a familiar one for Fabricius. </span><span style="line-height: normal;">Having moved to Sweden at the age of 15 to study at the Royal Swedish Ballet, she found herself living a life far from home at an early age and has since spent much of her career traveling and performing. Contemplating where she feels most at home - New York or Denmark - is a hard question for Fabricius to answer, but she says considers the stage a kind of home. </span></span><br />

I'm particularly smitten with the 80's club vibe of the <a href="https://youtu.be/HIuknff8FQA">CSS Remix</a> of that track. Not coincidentally, Fabricius said she wrote the song to cheer up a sad friend. "That's why," says Fabricius about the nature of a song to change our mood, "We need music!" One of her favorite tracks from the album is "Favor Friends," which is an ode to a friend who is there only there when she wants something. If you listen, you can hear her mom singing opera on the track. </span><br />

<span style="background-color: black;">Johnny Reed describes his music as "pop rock alternative" with a nod to the classic harmonies of artists like The Beatles and Crosby, Stills & Nash. Reed says he's been told that his drumming is reminiscent of Ginger Baker of Cream and his guitar playing of Keith Richards or Eric Clapton. Reed says that his creative process is free flowing. "When I play, I jam," says Reed. "Whatever goes is okay. I might start with piano, guitar or drums. I might start with a chorus or a bridge or verse and then not use that original idea or phrase at all. I just use the thing I came up with along the way." Reed is a longtime resident of Redondo Beach, one of the three Beach Cities located in Los Angeles County, California. Reed says he has a great connection with the ocean. "There's no other place I want to live."</span><br />

yourself to it and work for it. Don’t wait for some magical person to come
along and make you life better, DIY, Do It Yourself. I also stress live in the moment in my songs because life spins by so quickly, and everything can change in an instant. I know this well
because my daughter was in a car accident. She was in a coma for four months, a
hospital for a year and can’t walk to this day. So enjoy life and get the most out of it every
day because you never know what's next, That’s my message to the world!</span></span></li>

Kitten, Kimbra, Kiesza, Lindsey Stirling, Dev, Lana Del Rey and La Roux all released new music. There were new releases by electronica/EDM staples like Tycho, David Guetta, <span style="line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">Tiësto, Example, </span>Skrillex and Deadmau5. House fans saw new releases by Simian Mobile Disco and Booka Shade. Pioneers of the genre came out in force with Brian Eno & Karl Hyde, Bryan Ferry, Morrissey, Echo & the Bunnymen and Midge Ure releasing albums. The LCD Soundsystem and <span style="line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">Röyksopp said their goodbyes - at least in their current incarnations - in the form of farewell albums. And I've discovered a few unsung treasures like Voxmirage, Faded Paper Figures, Flight Facilities and White Hex.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; line-height: 20.7900009155273px;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">My Top 20 list includes a few albums that have achieved critical success. You will surely recognize those picks if you're keeping up with these kinds of things. Quite a few of the albums speak to my personal fondness for post punk, electro pop and disembodied robotic voices without consideration for acclaim. Check it out!</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Aphex Twin <i>Syro</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This album can be found on many a "Best of 2014" chart and with good reason. This is UK based Richard D James' 6th studio album under the pseudonym Aphex Twin, and the first in 13 years. It's contemporary and on point.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Arca <i>Xen</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Xen is the debut album of Venezuelan born producer Alejandro Ghersi who is best known for working with <span style="line-height: 22.3999996185303px;">Björk and FKA Twigs. All futuristic and stylistically interesting, this album is a critical darling.</span></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; line-height: 22.3999996185303px;"><span style="color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Audit Division <i>Audit Division EP</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Maybe it's because they vaguely remind me of The Juan MacLean by featuring a male and a female vocalist with a retro synthpop sound that I like this little sleeper EP no one has heard of.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Banks <i>Goddess</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">American Jillian Banks has pop appeal, but the soul laid bare lyrics and synthpop sound on her debut album garnered some positive attention among electronic music fans.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Broods <i>Evergreen</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This is New Zealand brother and sister duo Broods debut album, which is a follow up to their self titled EP. They have a broader pop appeal that will eventually get them some Top 40 airplay.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Caribou <i>Our Love</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Another album that has made it's way onto many "Best of 2014" charts, Our Love by Canadian musician Caribou is a feelings album. There are moments of real loveliness on this album.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Diamond Version <i>CI</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys makes a vocal appearance on this album, but I am most taken with the deconstructed Orwellian vocal samples like on "Science for a Better Life."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /><span style="line-height: 20.7900009155273px;"><b>Röyksopp</b></span><b> & Robyn <i>Do It Again EP</i></b></span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow;">Norwegian duo <span style="line-height: 20.7900009155273px;">Röyksopp</span> and Swedish songstress Robyn can do no wrong in my eyes. I especially like the cheeky "Sayit."<span style="font-family: inherit;"><b><i><br /></i></b></span></span></span><br />
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Gazelle Twin <i>Unflesh</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">British producer Elizabeth Bernholz brings us her dark and chilling second album. She was influenced by heavy subject matter like feral children and euthanasia, and the results sound a bit like the soundtrack to a nightmare.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Hundred Waters <i>The Moon Rang Like a Bell</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Hundred Waters hails from Florida and some of the members have been making music since middle school. This album has an emotive electro folk sound, Check out the single "Cavity."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The Juan MacLean <i>In a Dream</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">There is a certain something that just works in the collaborative efforts of American house master Juan MacLean and former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang. This album has been on repeat play for me since its release.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Liars <i>Mess</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Known for being experimental, <i>Mess</i> is the seventh studio album for the US band. It's quirky and provocative and a bit of a style change from their previous albums.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Mr Little Jeans <i>Pocketknife</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Norwegian Monica Birkenes is Mr Little Jeans. "Mercy" is the essential song on the album, although she does a cover of Arcade Fire's "The Suburbs."</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Museum of Love <i>Museum of Love</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Like The Juan MacLean, this is another offering from the DFA label. Pat Mahoney of LCD Soundsystem pairs Dennis McNany for a retro synthpop sound.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Phantogram <i>Voices</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">In another male and female pairing with some shared vocal duties, American duo Phantogram has pop appeal.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black;"><span style="color: yellow;"><br /></span></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Starwalker <i>Losers Can Win EP</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">French Jean-Benoit Dunckel and Icelandic Bardi Johannsson collaborate on this stylistically spare but intriguing EP.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">St. Vincent <i>St. Vincent</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">The eponymous 4th album by American St. Vincent has that irreverent and wry art rock style that she does so well.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Trust <i>Joyland</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Toronto based Robert Alfons was on his own for the second Trust album with Maya Postepski having returned to her duties with Austra. Alfons vocals are incredible and throwback influences like Kate Bush, Cocteau Twins and bygone video game soundtracks give it that synthpop flavor that I love.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Tying Tiffany <i>Drop</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Italian Tying Tiffany seems to fly under the radar in the US, but she has that art school dropout DIY style that deserves a listen.</span><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;"><br /></span>
<b><span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">Wild Beasts <i>Present Tense</i></span></b><br />
<span style="background-color: black; color: yellow; font-family: inherit;">This is the 4th studio album for Wild Beasts. Honestly, there is no other band who sounds quite like them, so it's best to just listen for yourself.</span><br />

<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite band?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">Hot Chip. They are innovative, catchy and influential.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite genre of music?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I listen to almost any kind of music. The main genres I enjoy are synth pop, electro pop, classic rock, reggae and soul.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite song?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">At the moment it would have to be Fleetwood Mac's "Everywhere." It has everything - nice 80s synths, groovy guitar and a catchy hook!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>First music memory?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">When I was 2 days old at the hospital my mother gave me a pillow radio because I was crying. When I got the radio next to my ear, I stopped crying immediately and just listened the music silently. I can’t remember it, of course, but it just shows how deeply music has always affected me. Now and still today.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>First CD or LP you bought?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I was kid of the 90's, so my first albums were</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">cassettes. I can’t really remember the first cassette, but it was probably some cheesy dance compilation of the time. I still have my old Walkman, and it works!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>First band you saw in concert?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">When I was around 16 years old I saw Finnish metal band Stratovarius. As many of you might know, Finland has the reputation of being the #1 metal country in the world, so I heard my fair share of metal as a teenager. Fortunately, I've been over it for quite some time.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What hobbies and interests do you have?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I like soccer and played for many years. I still follow English Premier League and Champions League. I also love to read artist biographies, science magazines and fiction books. And I love new technology.</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Do you have a nickname?</b> The nickname "</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">Uncle Tan" is just an abbreviation of my first name - Taneli. My niece gave the nickname to me about 10 years ago.</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Where have you traveled?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I love to travel a lot when ever I have a chance. I’ve been to Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Italy, France, Belgium, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Morocco, San Marino, Monaco, Greece, Yugoslavia...My favourite places are Lapland, Garda Lake in Italy and Nice in France. Extra mention goes to Nerja Neanderthal caves in Spain. Amazing place!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>If I could hang out with anyone who would it be?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I would be interested to have a word with Salvador Dali, Kate Bush and John Lennon. They are people I respect and have all created wonderful art that stands the test of time.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What animal would you be?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">I love sea turtles. They have been for 100 million years and it shows. They aren't rushing to anywhere. I think they have a quiet wisdom.</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite food? </b></span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">Indian food. The whole process of making it from the scratch and adding loads of different spices and then cooking it for hours. It’s heavenly food at its absolute best!</span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"> </span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite book?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">Hermann Hesse's <i>Knulp</i>.</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite movie?</b> The </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;"><i>Back To The Future</i> trilogy. I can’t get enough of this movie trilogy. I could watch it again and again and again!</span></span></li>
<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Favorite holiday and why?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">Summer holiday! It’s the only time of the year in Finland when you don’t have to wear jacket.</span></span></li>

<li><span style="background-color: black;"><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>Who has inspired you?</b> </span><span style="line-height: 18.3999996185303px;">A lot of people! <span style="font-weight: normal;">The 2 Bears</span> - <b>The Night is Young</b></h3>
Those cheeky Brits are at it again, albeit without the bear suits this time. <i>The Night is Young </i>is the sophomore album of The 2 Bears duo of Joe Goddard and Raf Rundell. Goddard is, of course, also part of the electronic staple, Hot Chip, and Rundell is a UK DJ and producer. This album has the nod to 90's house with pop hooks from The 2 Bears' first album <i>Be Strong</i> but with a bit of an Afrikaans influence from their travels to South Africa. Check out the tracks "See You," "Run Run" and "My Queen."<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/LnOqt7KfX6w?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Banks</span> - <b>Goddess</b></h3>
American Jillian Banks' debut album <i>Goddess</i> has been out since September, and the track "Waiting Game" grabbed me in the fall. Recently I've taken a liking to another single from the album, "Beggin for Thread." Something about the plaintive lyrics against the hum of a synth driven beat is compelling. Banks' soul laid bare songwriting is a friend to those who have experienced a broken heart and most of us can certainly relate!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Twix375Me4Q?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Ben Wash</span> - <b>Snob Rock</b></h3>
<i>Snob Rock</i> is the debut album by Ben Wash and the first full length LP that his collective, King's Head Records, has released. It's like a dance party with an attitude! Bridget Barkan, the former vocalist for Scissor Sisters, contributes vocals to three tracks. Some of the tracks on the album are brand new and some are previously recorded. "Give Me" is the single I've been playing a ton, and it handily gives you a sense of the edginess you can expect from the album.<br />
<span style="background-color: #fcfcfc; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/rF3QePjhGmM?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Röyksopp</span> - <b>The Inevitable End</b></h3>
The Norwegian duo Röyksopp have released <i>The Inevitable End</i> as a declaration of their inevitable end. Making full length studio albums, that is. If you've ever listened to The Knix Mix, you know that Röyksopp's brand of Scandinavian electro pop is my thing, so I have to pay homage. And anything they do in collaboration with Robyn is going to make my playlist. "Monument (The Inevitable End Version)" has been splitting time on my show with "SayIt" from the <i>Do It Again</i> EP.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/Zo6UnKr6Bwg?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The Presets</span> - <b>No Fun (Remixes)</b></h3>
The Presets' <i>No Fun (Remixes)</i> is actually pretty fun! I've been playing the original mix (the radio friendly edit) since I discovered it tucked away in singles section of the music library at the station. The Aussie electronic duo is known for their dance friendly tracks, and "No Fun" is no exception. House party anyone?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/HZ-KMzRWrI8?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Anna Lunoe</span> - <b>All Out EP</b></h3>
Anna Lunoe is another Aussie who reestablished herself in Los Angeles a couple of years ago. Her <i>Bass Drum Dealer</i> EP and <i>All Out</i> EP go all out! I read that she said she wants to write lyrics that are raw, honest and come from a real place, but she really just wants to dance. I feel you sister! Check out the remixes of the tracks "B.D.D." and "All Out" too.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/GIoftXmHRSw?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Oh Land</span> - <b>Earth Sick</b></h3>
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Former Danish ballet dancer gone pop singer-songwriter Oh Land's new album <i>Earth Sick</i> is meant to conjure up what it might feel like to be an astronaut longing for home. Oh Land's given name is Nanna Oland Frabricius. Now based in Brooklyn, she explored the idea by looking at her own world and thinking of what she might change were she far away and dreaming of home. "Head Up High" is a stand out track from the album.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/2ohG4fJFwHU?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Mansions on the Moon</span> - <b>Mansions on the Moon</b></h3>
Mansions on the Moon is a Los Angeles quartet with roots in Virginia Beach. Their eponymous album features a blend of styles for a sound uniquely their own - synthpop and dreamy vocal harmony. They're the kind of band that finds fans across genres. Check out the track "Somewhere Else Tonight."<br />

I've culled a few new releases from the multitude for your listening consideration. <br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Aphex Twin</span> - <b>Syro</b></h3>
There hasn't been an Aphex Twin (also known as England-based Richard David James) studio album since 2001. This one is pronounced "Sigh ro" which is apparently a word his kid made up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/RUAJ8KLGqis?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Example</span> - <b>Live Life Living</b></h3>
Englishman Elliot John Gleave's 5th studio album. He's calling out some old school gods as influences (Chemical Brothers, The Prodigy, Underworld, Faithless), so you know I'm into it.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/0wyoKWgy3SE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Busy P</span> - <b>Rainbow Man 2014 EP</b></h3>
French DJ Pedro Winter brings back the track Rainbow Man for 2014. Did you know he used to manage Daft Punk?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/2Bgb-60LeK8?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Faded Paper Figures</span> - <b>Relics</b></h3>
Fourth album from these indie electronic Californians. Synthpop sound. What's not to love?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/lPOzoLEz1hA?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">The Juan MacLean</span> - <b>In a Dream</b></h3>
Namesake John MacLean and former LCD Soundsystem member Nancy Whang. "A Place Called Space" is long for radio play, but I played it anyway.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/rcXh7SIB76A?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Audit Division </span>- <b>Audit Division EP</b></h3>
They're American, but they sound like Brits in the mid 80's New Order realm. Especially on songs like <a href="https://soundcloud.com/audit-division-music/tear-me-apart">"Tear Me Apart."</a><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/af4DhbjmsAo?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Diamond Version</span> - <b>CI</b></h3>
An collaborative effort by Germans Byetone and Alva Noto. Neil Tennant of Pet Shop Boys supplied vocals for "Were You There?" CI stands for "Corporate Identity" for those in the know.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/ocreJbKJykE?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Fenech-Soler </span>-<span style="font-weight: normal;"> </span><b>Rituals</b></h3>
The second album for this UK duo. A special version with 4 tracks from their first album hit the US this summer.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/SRupdVVAPwY?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Starwalker</span> - <b>Losers Can Win EP</b></h3>
French Jean-Benoit Dunckel of Air and Icelandic Bardi Johannsson of Bang Gang collaborate on this strangely pleasing EP. Check out the Bloodgroup Remix of <a href="https://soundcloud.com/starwalker/bad-weather-bloodgroup-remix">"Bad Weather"</a> should you get the chance.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.youtube.com/embed/QP3zjW4uJOI?feature=player_embedded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<span style="background-color: white; line-height: 20px;"><br /></span>
<br />
<h3>
<span style="font-weight: normal;">Röyksopp & Robyn</span> - <b>Do It Again EP</b></h3>
Norwegian duo Röyksopp partner up again with Sweden's Robyn. You remember "The Girl and the Robot" on Junior. One of my favorite albums in life.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">In December of last year I had the pleasure of interviewing The Sexbots' Ilima Considine on The Knix Mix. (Check out the December 15, 2013 blog post <a href="http://theknixmix.blogspot.com/2013/12/the-sexbots.html">here</a>.) Big things have been happening in her life since we last spoke, including a tour in Japan, a break up and a new album inspired by the breakup. The new album drops soon, and Ilima has plans underway for a supporting tour in the Northeast. </span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Ilima says that the new album was meant to be a concept album of light and life, and some songs were already written. That changed three week after her return from Japan, when she broke up with the person she describes as "the love of her life." She found herself grieving and unable to work. After a couple of months, she dusted herself off, dyed her hair red and turned her sorrow into an EP of songs about the relationship. The working title for the album has been "Songs for Jamil," but she says that it's not a diss album. She maintains that, while they didn't always bring out the best in each other, this man still remains the love of her life.</span><br />
<span style="font-family: inherit;">Our chat covers such varied topics as what does a person with severe food allergies find to eat in Japan, the difficulty of navigating your hometown when you could run into your ex anywhere you go, going on the road when you're a single mom of two and planning a tour on the other side of the country. You know you want to know the answers to these and many other questions!</span><br />

She is free spirited,<span style="font-family: inherit;"> unedited and </span>unapologetically<span style="font-family: inherit;"> herself. Not to mention her distinctly punk aesthetic. As Kristie tells it, she marched to a different beat early on. On Saturdays at 6PM, you can hear her on WERU as one of the hosts of Daydream Nation. </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">Kristie plays an </span><span style="font-family: inherit;">eclectic mix of everything: punk, blues, rock 'n' roll, reggae, Motown, 1980's. "Whatever," she says, "I feel like busting out that night!"</span><br />
You might not guess it when meeting her, but Kristie grew up in a fishing family in the small coastal village of Deer Isle. She describes a time when there weren't many kids who had dyed hair or shaved heads or rocked the goth look. She says people could be judgemental about the way she looked. "Why? Who knows? I didn't look like anyone else. That scared some people." Kristie says that her early love for music, especially punk rock, gave her an important outlet to express herself and shaped her into the person she is today.<br />
Kristie asserts that she is a Mainer through and through. Her childhood in coastal Maine gave her a deep love for the ocean. She affectionately describes lobstering with her dad, who sadly passed away last year, and her frequent swims in the crisp coastal waters of the Atlantic. "I like to make things interesting," says Kristie. "Still do."<br />
<ol>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">Favorite genre of music?</b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I would have to say punk/rock/post punk. The first LP I ever purchased was a Beach Boys' record. They were my first favorite band.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">First music memory?</b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I was a little girl. Maybe 3? For some reason, I believe that Donnie Osmond was coming to </span>Stonington<span style="font-family: inherit;"> to play at the Legion Hall. Who knows how I came up with this? I went and got myself all dressed up and waited and waited for one of my parents to take me to see "Donnie Marie." My mother did not know what to make of it. She told me to wait until my father came home from lobstering. Typically, when my father returned home from after a long day of fishing, the last thing he wanted to do was go see a concert. But he was a good sport. He played along with his youngest daughter's funny ideas. He told me to go ahead and get in the truck, and we'd find Donnie Marie. We drove to the Legion Hall, and he proceeded to drive me all over Deer Isle looking for the elusive Donnie Osmond. I was a bit disappointed to have missed him, but I was happy to have had a reason to get dressed up and cruise around the island, listening to the radio, with my dad.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">If I could hang out with anyone who would it be? </b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Oh boy. Jeez. This is a tough question. I am such a geek. I would have to say Henry Rollins. I have been a huge fan of his and his music since high school. I would love to spend a day with him; record shopping, book shopping, drinking coffee, anything. I have great respect for him.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">What animal would you be?</b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> If I could be any animal I would be a seal. I used to think I would want to be a cat. I am a crazy cat lady. However, I love to swim. I think seals are gorgeous, graceful, and playful. Just amazing. I would like to spend my days sunning myself on the rocks, slipping gracefully into the ocean and being a seal. Sounds perfect!</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">What would people be surprised to know about you?</b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> I think people would be surprised to learn that I am shy. </span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">What three words best describe you? </b><span style="font-family: inherit;"> Goofy, loving and funny.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">Who has inspired you? </b><span style="font-family: inherit;">My family, Henry Rollins, Ian </span>MacKaye<span style="font-family: inherit;">, Nick Cave, Sylvia Plath, Michael </span>Gira<span style="font-family: inherit;">, Boy George and many others!</span></li>
<li><span style="font-family: inherit;"><b>What is your favorite color?</b> It's a tie: black and purple.</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">What makes you laugh? </b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Nearly everything! I laugh every day. I laugh all the time. I can't pinpoint what I find funny. Silly, nonsensical, the everyday blah...all of it!</span></li>
<li><b style="font-family: inherit;">What did you want to be when you grew up? </b><span style="font-family: inherit;">Here's a list of things I have wanted to be since I was a child: A nun, a race car driver, a fashion designer, a fashion merchandiser, a writer. Now I believe I would be a great cat sitter. Or a vinyl sitter. Let me come and sit with your vinyl records!</span></li>

The moniker Wrongchilde can be traced to a dream Devine had while still in high school. A self release funded entirely by <a href="http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/wrongchilde">PledgeMusic</a>, the album has already been generating a bit of buzz. Fans can contribute to the cause and receive exclusive items like <i>Gold Blooded</i> pendant necklaces and a limited edition heart shaped vinyl. Devine, who is afraid of needles and blood (Also clowns, by the way, which are my personal nemeses.), pledges to donate a pint to the Red Cross for every 10 necklaces purchased. He promises to record the moment for posterity and the amusement of fans! <br />

Alain Whyte of Morrissey fame lends his talents on guitar. Interestingly, Way performs a duet on the lead single "Falling in Love Will Kill You," which was originally intended for a female vocalist. The unexpected combination of male vocals adds complexity to the guitar ballad. The title track from the album, "Gold Blooded," is a good example of the bridge that Wrongchilde builds between dream pop and electro pop. "Gold Blooded," according to Devine, is a phrase that represents the spirit of youth. "Love is a Battlefield," the song Pat Benatar made famous, appears on the album in romanticized version with fluid vocals supplied by Morgan Kibby. Fans still have a chance to get in on the limited <i>Gold Blooded</i> items on <a href="http://www.pledgemusic.com/projects/wrongchilde">PledgeMusic</a> and show their support for the project!<br />

<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: inherit;"><span style="vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">You can hear programmer Elaine Shute when she takes her turn at the helm on <i>On the Wing </i>on Monday's at WERU. </span><span style="vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Elaine says she wanted to be a DJ ever since she could remember but was too introverted as a kid to imagine being on the air. Instead she became an art major, envying the kids running the college radio station. She describes subbing for </span><span style="font-style: italic; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">On the Wing</span><span style="vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;"> and eventually getting her own show as fulfilling a dream.</span></span></div>

<span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: inherit;"><span style="line-height: 1; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Elaine chronicles fostering her love of music while growing up in Southern Maine "before it was the cool place it is now." <span style="background-color: #444444; font-family: inherit; line-height: 1; vertical-align: baseline; white-space: pre-wrap;">Elaine says she developed a lifelong habit of reading voraciously about rock, biking down to the local bookstore to pick up the latest issue of <i>CREEM </i>magazine when she was a teenager and these days grabbing a copy of <i>Mojo </i>magazine, which Elaine considers "the most intelligent writing currently available about rock."</span></div>

If you've visited an urban center and appreciated the unique talents of the street performers you encountered there, then you are already familiar with busking, a term used to describe the practice of performing in public for gratuities. New York City is home to some of the best street performers around. Described by <i>The Village Voice</i> as "New York's Own," <a href="http://www.theoeastwind.com/">Theo Eastwind</a> has been a street musician since arriving in NYC from Vienna, Austria in 1995 with nothing more than an old guitar on his back. He heard a man singing a cappella while walking through the subway and an idea took shape. The future "King of the Buskers" was born.<br />
<div>
Since then, Theo has become a strong advocate for performers working in the subway. In an effort to give back to the community while showcasing some of New York's finest street musicians, Theo organized what is now a quarterly event called the Busker Ball. On July 24th, National Busker Day, Theo will be among the performers for Busker Ball VII, which takes place at <a href="http://www.spikehillmusic.com/">Spike Hill</a> in Brooklyn Hill. The talented line up also includes <a href="http://kenxruan.com/">Ken Ruan</a>, <a href="http://saylaveeband.tumblr.com/">Emore Saylavee</a>, <a href="http://www.nycsubwaygirl.com/">"NYC Subway Girl" Cathy Grier</a>, <a href="http://gabrielroyal.bandcamp.com/">Gabriel Royal</a> and <a href="http://www.reverbnation.com/MrReedEnt">Mr. Reed</a>, some of whom will be performing at the Busker Ball for the first time. The doors open at 7PM. The suggested donation is a mere $10 for what will surely be an evening of great entertainment and celebration!<br />

<br /></div>
Ki:Theory (pronounced "key"), Virginia native Joel Burleson, is a gifted multi-instrumentalist, producer and recording artist. And since someone is likely to ask, Joel explains that the name Ki:Theory came about from having lived abroad in Japan. It's the Japanese equivalent of the Chinese word "chi," which - in simplified terms - means "energy." Even if you don't yet know Ki:Theory by name, you have likely appreciated his artistry in one medium or another. He has remixed tracks for artists as diverse as Kings of Leon, Queens of the Stone Age, UNKLE, Daft Punk and Ladytron, among others. His original music has been featured on TV shows, commercials, films and video games. His remix of Daft Punk's "The Son of Flynn" for <i>Tron: Legacy</i> was featured on the official remix album, <i>Tron: Legacy R3CONF1GUR3D</i>. I mean, how cool is that?<br />
<div>
I've been playing the 2 disc deluxe edition of <i>Kitty Hawk</i>, which dropped in April, on The Knix Mix since it arrived at the station. It's crazy good! The album, which you can download on <a href="http://kitheory.com/releases/">the Ki:Theory website</a>, features 6 unreleased Ki:Theory tracks and some amazing remixes. I was curious to interview the maestro behind the music, but what impressed me the most in chatting with Ki:Theory is that, despite his achievements, he is both genuine and modest.</div>

<div>
<div>
<i>Kitty Hawk</i> is at times haunting and moody; at other times pounding and danceable. His rendition of "Stand by Me" is uniquely dark and moving. The vocals supplied by Maura Davis (of indie band Denali fame) add an engaging feminine energy to the tracks "I Wanna Run" and "Needles." While Ki:Theory's origins are alt rock, there are electronic elements to his music, which stands out on banging tracks like the Break Science remix of "Kitty Hawk" and "Lay Our Body Down." "Open Wound," both the original and the Odesza remix, and "Holiday Heart" are a couple of my personal favorite tracks off the album. </div>
<div>
The Ki:Theory mini tour in support of the album had just begun when The Knix Mix live interview took place, but as of this blog post, the tour has come to a noteworthy conclusion. Ki:Theory played at Great Scott in Allston, Massachusetts on June 21st, so I hope local Knix Mix fans were able to make the trip! I wish I'd been in the audience for his hometown appearance in Richmond, Virginia on June 28th at Strange Matter. Maura Davis was scheduled to appear, and I imagine that had to be an epic event! </div>
<div>
There are official videos for "Stand by Me" and "Venin," which you can find in links below. Give a listen to the complete Knix Mix interview with Ki:Theory <a href="https://soundcloud.com/karen-nix/kitheory-interview">here</a>! Find out answers to questions you didn't even know you had. Like who would Ki:Theory choose, living or not, to sit down with for a meal and talk? I know, but you'll have to listen to find out!</div>

The video for <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpPKOpo6-UA">"Leave The Lights On"</a> has New York City transplants Mainland breezily zipping around the city proper on skateboards with the languid ease of adolescents everywhere. There is something captivating about the grainy home movie quality of the video set against a summery cityscape with the quartet hitting Eight Avenue, hanging out by the Hudson River and meeting up with some unintentional costars along the way. The song itself has a certain retro quality with the angst of the 80's alt bands that defined my youth (think the Pixies) and the rock out energy of a punk band, a genre that Mainland has appropriately coined as "puke-up punk." <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Mainland came to be through an eclectic music collection, a rehearsal space under the Manhattan Bridge and a spontaneous recording session with Jim Eno of Spoon. The NYC by way of California band consists of enigmatic frontman Jordan Topf, who also plays guitar and synths, Corey Mullee on lead guitar and synths, Alex Pitta on bass and Dylan Longstreet on drums. "Leave the Lights On" is a track from their second EP, <a href="https://soundcloud.com/mainlandnyc/sets/shiner-ep"><i>Shiner</i></a>, which debuted with the title track "Shiner." As a follow up to their first EP, <i>Girls Unknown</i>, Mainland has secured a name for themselves in the local music scene, and the word is starting to spread. Two more video installments chronicling life in the city will be released this summer. Can't wait to see what else the boys have in store!<br />

Like Devo with their satirical humor or Talking Heads with their deadpan Delphian lyrics. Then along comes Resistor with <i>First World Problems</i>. The first single from the album, "Narcissist," was immediately on my playlist because of its irresistibly catchy refrain. It's equally irresistible to picture the narcissist in your life while the song plays. Doesn't everyone have one? The video for the track has all the elements of a <i>Saturday Night Live</i> skit set to music. Funny and with cultural references that you will surely appreciate. Note the nod to the iconic <i>Say Anything</i> boombox scene but with a twist. Brilliant! Steve does the <i>Star Wars</i> sleeveless t-shirt and red jogging shorts justice, I must say. The rest of the album is equally cheeky. You'll have to give it a listen to know what I mean.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjypCVKWGJjNvqWq2LA9Y0NYcVaSR6Y_fmC8B9PMX4_s-uRDKjnyWOY_uvA4_2SVk6HOkzJcWxe51neOm4-xUutyjzy7tUlQR16Ecs-Bm90bl1lgUBcQmn7ZiXku0ROvBvUi6To_t_WIg/s1600/download+(3).jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjypCVKWGJjNvqWq2LA9Y0NYcVaSR6Y_fmC8B9PMX4_s-uRDKjnyWOY_uvA4_2SVk6HOkzJcWxe51neOm4-xUutyjzy7tUlQR16Ecs-Bm90bl1lgUBcQmn7ZiXku0ROvBvUi6To_t_WIg/s1600/download+(3).jpg" height="320" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Resistor, the <i>nom de synth</i> of Philadelphian Steve Golderg, arose from the ashes of a previous band, Goldberg's financial and emotional resources were low, and he needed a way to make music quickly and cheaply without depending on anyone. He began writing songs with only his computer and his voice, and Resistor was born.<br />
Resistor's debut full-length album, F<i>irst World Problems</i>, was released on May 20th. With a synthpop sounds reminiscent of The Human League and OMD, the record was recorded and mixed by Jeff Zeigler (The War on Drugs with Kurt Vile) in Philadelphia. While songs like "Narcissist" and "Choose Your Parents Well" are tongue in cheek, the core of the record is genuine. Over a bed of New Wave synths, energetic drum machines and multilayered vocal harmonies, Resistor parodies the pursuit of fame and questions the meaning of artistic success. He wonders "Why do I crave the spotlight? Do I deserve it? And why should anyone care about what I have to say?"<br />

<b>Any special talents? </b><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">Immense physical strength. My best squat, bench and deadlift to date are 405 lbs., 290 lbs., and 525 lbs., respectively. By powerlifting standards those aren't elite or anything, but I think by like synthpop or hipster standards they are. There are probably a lot of guys in metal bands who lift a lot more though. Also I'm good at JavaScript; check out my 100% hand-crafted artisanal website <a href="http://resistorsings.com/">http://resistorsings.com/</a>.</span><br />

<b>Favorite funny story about you? </b><span style="background-attachment: initial; background-clip: initial; background-image: initial; background-origin: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-size: initial;">So a little while back I took part in this "fitness transformation" contest on the Internet where you had to post 12 week before and after photos. It turned out that a random Internet person had posted them on his gay beefcake Tumblr, then they got reblogged on a satirical Tumblr called "Fake Geek Guys," then Wil Wheaton reblogged them, and then tons of other people did. I just checked and the post has 11,176 notes, mostly from gay porn Tumblrs. Not that there's anything wrong with that. That's probably been the peak of my fame to date. Also, I didn't win that round of the transformation contest, but I entered it again the next time and took first place. (Way to go, Steve!)</span><br />

I'm excited to unveil a new profile feature you'll be seeing regularly on The Knix Mix blog where readers get to learn a little bit about their favorite artists in the artist's own words! Danny Van, front man for the rock outfit sMALLTIME, has graciously accepted the challenge of answering my inaugural artist profile Q&A. sMALLTIME is a unique rock outfit from Orange County, CA consisting of Danny on lead vocal and rhythm guitar, Kenny Goorabian on lead guitar, Steve Clayton on bass guitar and Dusty Slaybaugh on drums. Their music is a mix of rock, blues, country and soul with an inspiring message of grace, recovery and redemption. It's clear this band of musical veterans knows how to use their God given talents. Danny explains, "We try to write songs that stand the test of time. A good rock song, in my humble opinion, is honest and simple and sometimes 'simple' is very allusive, but that's what we aim for." The sMALLTIME EP was released May 20th and is available everywhere. sMALLTIME has just finished their video for "Ya Never Know," which you can see on YouTube. Planning for a summer tour is underway and details will be announced on their website.</div>

God's BIGTIME we're sMALLTIME. We're just trying to be as honest as we can. That's where good rock music
comes from. We want to write songs that
are good today and still good twenty years from now. I love any rock performed with passion. Like if AC/DC's “Highway to Hell” comes on
the radio, I gotta listen. That rock cord
progression is one of the best ever written, and when Bon Scott sings “I'm on the highway to
Hell,” I believe him. I don't agree with
the message but I love the song. I'm
hoping I sing our songs with that same passion.</span></li>

Hailing from the San Francisco Bay area, Preston comes from a musically gifted family. His parents once had a gospel band called The Sensational Travelers. As a child, he joined his family in a group dubbed The Gospel Jackson Five. The multifaceted Preston is not only a talented singer, he is also a musician with a particular affinity for the bass guitar. He began by the trombone in a jazz ensemble as a teen and by learning lead guitar at home from his dad. As he progressed, he began to play the bass guitar, even playing bass for Dorothy Morrison's gospel band. With Eclectic Soul, Preston tries his hand as a solo artist. The album, says Preston, "comes from the heart." Eclectic Soul has an R&B sound with a side of funk, but Preston's early exposure to gospel is an influence that can be heard throughout.<br />
Preston says "What is close to me about the CD is it's a collection of some of the first songs that I wrote that I had an opportunity to evolve to this level." Preston feels the album authentically represents him as an artist. He also was able to develop his hand as a songwriter. "As a songwriter you want to be a story teller. I'm proud of that, that I got to tell my story and tell other stories too. Some tracks on the album are derived from his own experiences and some are based on the experiences of others. Preston says "Driving Me Away" is autobiographical while the inspiration for "Stood Up" came from observation and talking to people. Preston likens it to hanging out at the local barber shop and hearing the stories, which he describes as a "collage of experiences." Preston's experience of creating Eclectic Soul was a positive one. "At this point, for me, it's becoming easier because I'm understanding more of who I am as an artist. Musically, in that context, it helped me with the direction I want to go."<br />
Preston says that Eclectic Soul is doing well nationally. He's looking to start a tour and response to the album will determine where dates will be set up. Preston can be found online at his website as well as iTunes and YouTube. If you want to give him a shout out, he'd love to hear from you on Twitter!
